Photo Hunt #53: Orange

IMG_0488, originally uploaded by M'roy.

I was surprised to see orange groves on our way back from Sequioa-Kings Canyon NP one summer so I snapped while we were about to take the curve.

I surfed the net for some information about California's citrus industry, in particular orange industry for this theme. Here's what I found.

~ California's citrus industry ranks second to Florida.

~ Oranges, on average, accounted for 2/3 the state's citrus crop.

~ While California produces 24 percent of the nation’s oranges, its crop accounts for 80 percent of those going to the fresh-market (which means you're probably eating some California oranges right now).

~ Navel oranges comprise most of California’s orange crop. Navels accounted for about 75 percent over the past three seasons. Valencia oranges account for the remainder.

~ The value of production for California’s oranges averaged $578 million over the past three seasons, 98 percent of which came from fresh-market sales.
