Iris Farm
"You are here at the right time. The irises are about a week away from their peak", said the lady that greeted us as we walked in. We heard about the iris farm from a free local magazine that gets delivered to our house every month. In the ads, it said they only open one month a year and this year they were open from April 15. But I checked the website to make sure and good thing I did because for this year, they were open from April 22.
We thought we'd visit a week after it opened. The timing was perfect for us as the weather was glorious. The farm was 35 miles away from home and is situated in the same town that is home to an outlet store - so shopping and visiting and iris farm in one trip.
The lady instructed us what to do when we find something we like to buy. Or she hastened upon seeing the hubs tripod to add that we could take pictures if that's all we wanted to do.
She read our minds. We didn't get anything home, as our gopher problems continues to give us headaches. I had planted iris bulbs two years ago. On the first year, we had a few plants. This year, there was only one. I think bulbs are much too delicious for the gophers to resist. Until we get our gopher problems in check, I will not be planting any bulbs in the garden. As a matter of fact none of the tulips came out this year. I'm guessing they had been gopher lunch long time ago.
Here are what we captured on our iris farm visit.
I'm a fan of tile mosaic, since I saw Gaudi's creations.
You can see not all the plants have blooms.
And now the irises:

OMG, Maria. I have never heard of an iris farm. Like the tulip fields here in The Netherlands, it would take my breath away. We had one clump of irises in Atlanta and saw them come to life faithfully every year, just that one month. You're right. Georgia clay must be too tough for the gophers...thankfully. Our tulips didn't pop up again after their first year but the irises did, year after year. I LOVE these images. So beautiful.

i'd love to visit farms like this. the irises are so gorgeous and i could almost smell them from here. thanks for making my day. :)
ReplyDeleteThose are great shots, such beautiful flowers. There's nothing like that here - we haven't got a good climate for growing such things.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, beautiful flowers, I especially love that you included some individual shots too. And 'Oh my' I would be beside myself to visit such a place, I have to say...I am planning a trip as we speak (if only!)
ReplyDeleteAll those flowers are really beautiful! Ang ganda!
ReplyDeleteLovely flowers - no wonder it's not just you (or your husband)taking pictures!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful place! My irises are still just short leaves coming up out of the ground, so it's great to see all of these. Such a lovely assortment!

Wow! I have never seen a lot of varieties. Wonderful collection!
ReplyDeleteThe outlet store is very strategic. Just like the Ranunculus Field in Carlsbad, the outlet store is just next to it.
Oh wow! Utterly gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love irises - but I didn't know until I saw your pictures!

ReplyDeleteA lovely world, with all those flowers. The close up of the iris are beautiful. I hadn't seen so many variations of colors and shapes before.
ReplyDeletePS While we don't have gophers, we have lots and lots of deer. they don't dig up the bulbs but they do chew everything they like down to ground level.
Beautiful colors! Didn't know they had multicolored petals.
ReplyDeleteA fine post. I like the general setting pictures of this great looking place and the following shots of close ups. Nice detail and color in your shots too. What a great place to visit.
ReplyDeletethese are gorgeous! the colors are amazing. makes me wonder if we have iris here.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I love the blue irises. Didn't know this existed either...By the way, at the tulip farms up in Washington, they top the tulips about three weeks after they've bloomed so that the fallen petals can't spread any diseases...go figure!
ReplyDeletesuch a nice to visit...again and again...and buy fresh flowers too :P
ReplyDeleteThese are the most beautiful irises I've seen. Fantastic shots! I like the sign too.
