Bangladesh: Dhaka Christian Cemetery

The Dhaka Christian Cemetery is one verdant spot in the busy chaotic urban Dhaka. It is surrounded by tall fence and and equally tall gate. The gate is always closed, so knock if you need to get in. The caretaker and his family would open the gate and inquire about your business. Usually they know everyone who comes to visit their departed loved ones.

What sets the cemetery apart from others I've visited is that the architecture of the headstones/graves. Not only are they interesting, they are also quite old. In this latest visit I spotted one that belonged to a bigwig in the old days, with a title.

Unfortunately 4 years separates my two visits and I have not seen any improvement in the graves; neither is there more decay, at least I didn't notice. I just wish that the government would understand the historical importance of this cemetery and would put enough resources (if there is any available) to the upkeep of the cemetery.

  5. How beautiful these crumbling buildings look and how wonderful the light streaming through the upper archways. But I can see they are also vulnerable to the elements and soon could dissolve into dust.

  15. All that weed and plants make the cemetery look so verdant. Feels like stumbling into some unknown ruins.

But indeed some upkeep need to be done - who knows someone might even step on a snake while there?

  16. Looks like the plants and weeds are taking over the cemetery. I am, for some reason, scared of cemeteries :(

  17. The greenery is so "fresh" that it does not even look like a cemetery, without considering the crosses.

The ruins made it really look so ancient, love it!
