Dixon Lamb Festival

In late September of 2014, we heard about the Lamb Festival in Dixon, a city about 20 miles from the state capital of Sacramento. We got so excited because we love going to street fairs and festivals. We also enjoy sampling the food in festivals. Plus, this was the first time we were hearing of this festival.

So we cleared our schedule on the Sunday afternoon and drove an hour to get there. There was a small entrance fee. However, it was pretty clear from the get-go that this was not a festival on lamb the meat, but the sheep and its wool and fleece. The annual festival also had contests on shearing, spinning, etc. We didn't see any of these.

There were two pavilions that housed many vendors of fibers, yarns, fibers, soaps, jewelry and knitting paraphernalia. In every corner people are knitting, spinning, weaving. There's a few of us watching in fascination at the crafty people.

Just like any festival, there were the mainstays - rides, face painting, jumpers and people watching. The food selection however we found very limited. However, the lamb sandwich we gobbled was very tasty.

Out in the back, we found the stables with many different types of sheep from different parts of the US. Also we joined others to watch a demonstration on shearing.

  4. That sounds like fun but I don't think I'd like the lamb sandwich. And in answer to your question on my blog, I've never been to the San Francisco area in January (or anywhere in California that I can remember).

  12. I love attending festivals, too! Especially those that showcase the locals' crafts. They still weave there! I like the pictures of threads. Seem to invite me to learn knitting or try embroidery. Such pretty and colorful pictures, Maria.
