Port of Call: Santorini - Fira & Sunset Part 4
The time we spent in Oia however limited was well worth it. I could have stayed there for much much longer but we were catching the last bus to Fira. The ship was sitting on Fira side of the waters and it was imperative we take the bus, as it was included in the fee we paid for the ferry to Oia.
Once we reached Fira we rushed to the cliffside to watch the sunset. We arrived in Fira just in time for sunset. And what a glorious show we enjoyed.
The sunset attracted a lot of people, as expected, and this was the only photo I took of people shooting at the sunset. The sunset was more enticing this time around than watching people enjoy the sunset.
Once the sunset was over, we realized that we were hungry. This whole part of the town was lined with boutiques, stores, and restaurants. With so many restaurants nearby, it was tough to choose where to eat. In the end, we chose The Greeks for its proximity to the donkey parade route and the homey atmosphere. We were eating outdoors.
I have ordered the grilled squid, which throughout the rest of our travel to Europe we decided to order just so we can make comparisons. I must say this squid was fresh and perfectly cooked. One of the best I've had.
The friendly owner chatted with us. All throughout the four Greek islands that we visited we only encountered wonderful, friendly and helpful Greek people. I hope that they can bounce back after this sad episode in their country.
After dinner, we went shopping a little bit.
It was getting really late. Time to go. So we went straight to the cable car for a ride down. I was really looking forward to the ride. As a matter of fact, I wanted to ride it going up this afternoon; but taking the ferry made more sense then. However, the line to the cable car was so long that my heart sank. I kinda knew that the cable car ride wasn't happening because of the lengthy queue, but the alternative wasn't very appealing either. The alternative was to take the steps/stairs down to the water's edge. It is the same route that the donkeys take. I knew that the walk down was long (not as bad going down as it is going up for sure) so I kept my mouth shut and quietly took my spot at the queue.
Then, someone from our group of four confidently said, "We are taking the stairs, this queue is just too long. It's faster to walk down."
Walk down we did. In the upper part of the steps we managed to take photos.
The thing about the stairs is that at night it was dark. Many stretches are really dark, without flashlight we used our cell phones to guide us. We really needed to see where we were stepping because the length of the stairs was littered with donkey poop. The smelly stairs added to the entire experience of Santorini.

ReplyDeleteOh geez I would have fainted and fallen on donkey poop. Yucky! I'm not certainly fit for any sort of stairs climbing or descending. he he he. I would have patiently waited for the cable car ride but I understand that time was limited.

ReplyDeleteAs again, i love your shots, they are different from what i usually see about Santorini. That sunset reflections on the white building are exquisite, and i smiled at the lone people shot. At first i thought it was you. The night shot i also envy.
