Montserrat: Short, Sweet and Magical Part 1

When I first visited Barcelona in 2009, I vaguely remember reading up about Montserrat(serrated mountain). It wasn't in my list of must-see's to be honest. I was intent on taking in the sights of Barcelona and if time permitted nearby seaside town of Girona was next in my list. Sadly, that did not materialize either.

In the time between the first visit and the planning of the second visit, I was bombarded with images of Montserrat from blogs that I read and follow and so this beautiful mountain spot 1.5 hours from Barcelona was in my list of must sees the second time around.

From Placa Catalunya station, we traveled by train about 1.5 hours to the foot of the mountain, where we stopped to take the railway up to the mountains. From the Monistrol stop one can choose to ascent via cable car or the funicular/railway. We chose the latter. As the railway rose up the mountains, we passed by spectacular scenery of villages in the valley floor and rocky serrated mountain.

THE GROUNDS

Aside from Montserrat's religious significance, its natural beauty alone is reason to visit. Breathtaking beauty surrounds you as you look out to the mountain or to the valley below.

  7. What an amazing mountain, so beautiful. That railroad looks like a cog railway, like the one that goes up our local Pikes Peak.

  12. I opted for Girona on our day out of the city and it was beautiful, but I would have loved enough time for Monserrat too. Maybe someday... :)

  20. Wow, that's indeed beautiful most especially because you don't have to hike to reach it! LOL I've never been to Spain. If the Schengen visa were not so hard to get, I would have visited it by now. Barcelona is love! Gaudi!!!
