San Francisco: May 25, 2017

May 25, 2017 was a very special day. It was our 10th wedding anniversary. Should be a big celebration, no? Well, we are not into "big" celebrations or parties. In fact, we did not have a church wedding because I don't like people looking at me. No lie. I was not going to admit it to everyone, but my niece verbalized it earlier this year too, when family were asking her when's the big day. She said, "I'd like to get married, but probably not at church, because I don't want people looking at me!" I hugged her and told her, Thank You. My sentiments exactly. We definitely have the same blood coursing through our veins.

Also, when we got married we agreed that we were not going to give presents for birthdays, anniversaries or special occasions. Instead we would share "experiences" for these occasions. The Morocco trip was an advanced 10th anniversary present to each other.

Still, on our anniversary we wanted to do something. A visit to the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park was the first thing we both thought. What a great way to spend a day in what is billed as: an aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum—all under one living roof.

Next, we went to walk around Stow Lake and Rhododendron Dell before we deemed it was late enough for an early dinner.

A very interesting thing happened as we were driving to the restaurant. We passed by the Orthodox church on Geary. We passed this church thousands of times throughout the years, but on this day, it was open. The husband quickly made a U turn and found a parking in front of the church. We were warmly invited inside. I was always curious about the interiors of churches and other houses of worship.

A bucket list item ticked off when we finally got to dine at Tadich Grill. We had drinks at the bar while waiting for our dinner. The restaurant was jampacked, as usual.

For appetizer, we had the Tadich Grill platter, good for 2, containing Medley of Crab Legs, Oysters*, Prawns, Marinated Herring, Smoked Salmon, Smoked Trout, Calamari Salad, Tomatoes, Anchovies, Capers, Garnish. The garnish was enough lettuce to make it seafood salad. This alone would have been enough.

The hubs had Mediterranean white branzino sea bass with potatoes and vegetables.

I had the specialty of the house: seafood cioppino with garlic bread.

The meal was cheaper than we anticipated.

It was a very enjoyable day.

  3. Happy 10th anniversary! It's nice to share experiences rather than presents. I hope that if/when I find my partner in life, he would also feel the same haha Here's more years of good life and travel experiences to you both!

  4. Good for you, Maria, on the "no presents" for those special occasions. Astrid and I are exactly the same, wanting to spend our money on trips/experiences, as you say. At our age, we have everything we need! Even if we didn't, we'd still save our money for trips, which are more important to us. Happy Anniversary. This year in in August is our 10th year of having met each other. 2.5 years later we were married.
