Morocco: Marrakech (Koutoubia Mosque and Saadian Tombs), part 2

Awoke 7 am and went down to breakfast. The spread they have for breakfast here is really good. All the hotels we've been have wonderful breakfast spread. I like to wake up earlier so that I can linger over breakfast. I really hate to rush through breakfast. Having a leisurely breakfast sets the tone for a good day, I think.

Around 9 am we were ready to go get this day going. We were eager to see the big city and its sights. The bus dropped us off a local park and we got to walk to and by Koutoubia Mosque with its large minaret, which is a landmark here in the city. When you see this minaret, you know you are in the most famous square, the Jamaa el Fna.

In the park by Koutoubia Mosque, we got to pose for a group picture for the first and only time.

The photos above with the blue skies were photographed in the afternoon, when we went to visit the square on our own.

In the morning when we visited it with the group, it was overcast and cold.

SAADIAN TOMBS

The Saadian Tombs are sepulchers that belong to the Saadian Dynasty. The Saadian Dynasty was a Berber dynasty that rule Morocco from 1549 to 1659. The tombs were sealed until their discovery in 1917. The enclosure consists of two main mausoleums, with 66 tombs laid out within them and over 100 more outside in the gardens.

  7. Just amazing, the architecture alone is something I would go there to see, the last photo, what are those tiled areas for?

  8. Lingering over breakfast? Couldn't agree more! I didn't get up all those mornings at 5 am (when I was working) and gobbling a muffin to repeat that during retirement .... Such exquisite architecture - the craftsmanship to make stone look like lace .... And I also found the tile designs and tones mesmerizing. Thanks for sharing.
