A Day of Sightseeing in Funchal, Madeira, part 1

Day 8 of the cruise and the 4th straight port day found us in the Portuguese island of Madeira in the city of Funchal. I was excited to explore this island, even though I don’t have a clue what this island offered. As usual taking into consideration the very limited time allotment we have in this port, we were keen on taking the HOHO bus tour. The price was $49 pp, a bit steep we thought given that there were 5 of us and for less than $250 we knew we could score a private van to tour us. True enough we were able to find a van that asked for $30 pp and had the same itinerary and stops as the HOHO bus yet would also give in to our whims, like staying in one spot for as long or as short as we want.

The first stop was at Miradouro do Cristo Rei do Garajau. OMG! The view from up there was stunning. The mountains meeting the ocean and all the houses sitting on the mountain made for a splendid sight. Cacti and aloes and other succulents line the pathways of the viewpoint adding extra beauty to the experience. The cherry on top of this sundae is the very pleasant weather. The warmest weather (January) we have so far, a tad humid, but overall perfect conditions for sightseeing.

There was what looked like an abandoned skate park with graffiti and murals. Worth photographing.
