My New York Minutes (2)

What is this you'd ask and why I took a photo of it? I don't exactly know what this is, but this is one of the first sights I've seen as the taxi drove out of JFK. I thought the sky was particularly lovely that day. As the taxi weaves out of JFK and towards our destination, I rolled down the window and enjoyed the sights. Sights that reminded me of my hometown, the Philippines. The weather was the same, warm and humid. The air smelled the same, I couldn't explain it. I did remark upon stepping out of the taxi that I feel so at home. Who knew?

Any New Yorker care to tell me what this structure is?

  1. That's an interesting shot. I'm not sure what it is. If no one answers, I'll try to remember to ask my sister who has lived in Manhattan for over 30 years if she knows what it is. The sky is gorgeous.

I know what you mean about feeling at home somewhere far from where home is. I went to Ulm, Germany when my daughter was doing a student exchange there, and I was taking her to France on the train for a mother/daughter weekend. I couldn't believe how much Ulm reminded me of Boone in the North Carolina mountains where my mother was from. It was weird but everything about it made me feel like I was visiting my grandmother in Boone but I was actually in Germany. Very odd to me.

  2. I haven't a clue, Maria, but I do identify with the feelings you had when you stepped out of the taxi. That's how I've feel about Europe every time I'm there: "this is home!"

  4. hhmmm...probably because some areas reminds you of Philippines?! the sky is definitely blue. and actually this photo could pass as a photo from Manila (somewhere south probably).

  6. Photo Cache, I took this very photo when I was leaving JFK a couple of months ago. I think (but don't know for sure)it's the power plant for the airport...

  7. Hah, you got me stumped here. It's probably something that I miss on ground level because I always use the elevated Airtrain on my way to/from JFK. Sorry, can't help you :(

  10. One of your readers above is correct. It is indeed the power plant for JFK Airport.
