Photo Hunt #45: Garbage

I'm back photo hunting after a week off. I couldn't find any garbage image from my New York series that I am currently running (can you believe that!) so I rummaged through the chest full of old photos.

When a city holds a marathon that is both participated by world-class athletes and the regular Joes and Janes, everyone has fun. Volunteers are spread out in intervals handing out free water.
But big events like this create big problems for the city in terms of cleaning up the garbage afterwards. I did not even show you the bottles of beer that was left all over the marathon route.
From Bay to Breakers 2008.

  2. I have to say that those cups look kinda cool strewn all over the street. Not much fun to clean up, I bet.

    Happy weekend.

  4. These are great shots for the theme. They actually don't look bad since it's a race and goes with the territory although I know it is a lot of work to clean up after the race. Happy weekend!

  6. Great shots but to be fair it might be a bit of a problem for the runners to take their rubbish with them! Seriously, have a happy weekend

  7. EW! Look at all that garbage! Humans can be such pigs!

  8. I've done Bay to Breakers many times as well as other runs, and this is a common sight since the runners don't want to slow down to crowd around a garbage can to throw the cups away. At least it's just mess and not really dirty, right? I hope that's where some of the race entry fee goes: to pay people to clean up all those cups!

  9. wow - such a reminder, but at least (although wasting so much) it does get picked up by hard working volunteers! Reminds me of triathlons too!

  12. the cleaning up and the environmental cost can be burdensome.

I wish there's a more environmentally friendly way to distribute the water ...
