Morocco: Marrakech, (Bahia Palace) part 3
One of Marrakech's attractions is the Bahia Palace. Why I haven't heard of it before I came was because I didn't know anything about Marrakech at all. However, this is one of the good things about joining a group tour. They will take you to all the mandatory sights.
Reading up on the Bahia Palace it was built with the intent to be the most impressive palace of all times. Authorized by the Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed ben Moussa, the palace took over ten years to complete. The palace sits on 8 hectares and 150 rooms with many gardens and patios. The harem is part of the visit, it used to house Abu Bou Ahmed's four wives and 24 concubines.
Unfortunately, all the rooms are empty. When the vizier died, many including his wives and the sultan took all the artwork and furniture to decorate their houses. Fortunately though, the ceilings and the tiled walls and floors remain unscathed.
The palace is walking distance from the Saadian Tombs.

ReplyDeleteI love Moroccan architecture! The detail work is simply amazing! Thanks for visiting and commenting on my Photo Journey...re: the Singapore Sling...it did originate at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore...and I was so surprised that it wasn't very good...certainly not like the ones I've had here in the States! It was too sugary sweet which suggested to me they used a lot of simple sugar and not much fresh juice...disappointing to say the least!
ReplyDeleteWow! Look at those ceiling and floors. So grand.
ReplyDeleteVery palatial even without the furniture and stuff.
