A Day In Monterey

Several days ago we spent a day in Monterey, California. It was my birthday and we thought spending it in Monterey would be fun. In the last 3 years, my birthday was a day in the city, San Francisco. I would have loved another day in the city, but my husband wanted to drive a little bit so Monterey it was, a two-hour drive. The challenge was finding something new to do in Monterey after many visits there. Thankfully, we found two things to do there that were new to us. That in addition to my birthday lunch made our day in Monterey worthwhile.

The first thing we did was visit the Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo, in the old presidio of Monterey. It boggles the mind how we have missed this church since we have been coming here for 20 years or so. But thankfully Mr. Internet was right on target with this visit. It is a very charming church. Mr. Wikipedia says: the cathedral is the oldest continuously operating parish and the oldest stone building in California. Read more about it here.

A lovely lunch followed the church visit. We were in the old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey and chose to embrace the "tourists" in us. We normally don't eat here because, well, we don't go where tourists go, except today. We ate in one of the restaurants in the wharf and requested for a table with a view of the water and thankfully one just opened up.

Lastly, we visited the Dali Expo in the Museum of Monterey, which is a 2-minute walk from the wharf. The collection belongs to Dmitry Piterman and is being shown as a permanent exhibit, to my understanding. There is $20 entrance fee and a guide to explain the collection. The collection is huge and covers two floors. Very interesting. Click here for more information.

  3. Happy birthday to you, and looks like a fun time in Monterrey. I've only been there once or twice over the years, but such a beautiful area. Sounds like while you were in Monterrey, we were a little ways south of you in Pismo Beach.
