Day Trip to Girona
The 40-minute ride was smooth and fast. The train was very nice and clean, although initially other people were seating in our seats, but we had tickets so they vacated once we showed our tickets. I liked that the entire ride was not completely underground. I enjoyed seeing some countryside scenes.
When we emerged from the subway and up the escalators it was onto a large square. Basically, we had an idea what to see, but none of us took the time to research. And so we just let our feet take us wherever. The city is so beautiful. It was love at first sight for me. But the reason why I added this city to our itinerary was because it is one of the shooting locations for the famous tv show Game of Thrones.
Come with me as I reminisce the beautiful sunny yet chilly January day in Girona with the following photos.
Arriving in Girona
Girona Cathedral is the one stop we wanted to take here. Everything else that happened after the visit to the cathedral was just bonus.
A surprise came when we found out that the entrance fee to see the cathedral also allowed us to visit the nave of St. Feliu. A real treat.
The Medieval charm of the city spoke to my soul. I wished that we had stayed at least one night here instead of staying all our days before and after the cruise in Barcelona (although on second thought we should have added an extra day for Girona). Once we had crossed out the must-do in our list, we thought we'd explore the area on foot. We rambled from one cobblestone alley to another while always on a look out for a perfect selfie spot, which by the way are plenty.
Then the husbands and the millennial got the hunger pangs.
Much later another hunger attack came and this time we settled to eat while seated - keeping us out of the cold and at the same time giving our feet rest.
I could not stop taking photos even on the walk back to the train station.
The Eiffel Bridge is one of the 11 bridges in Girona and the most famous one. It was constructed by Gustave Eiffel just before the construction of the famous Eiffel Tower.
On the train ride back to BCN, the millenial sat with one of the husbands. We were trying to pair her with one of the gentleman's son. We told her to sit next to her future father-in-law and she gamely did.
This ends the narrative of my 17-day trip to Barcelona, including a 12-day Canary Islands cruise in January of 2019.
In all honesty, the inspiration to blog has diminished immensely (if not disappear completely) during this quarantine period. I hope to rekindle the love of blogging again soon. I still have one more trip in the offing that I have yet blogged so I hope that will keep this blog afloat while we're all grounded.
I hope you are all doing well mentally and physically as we ride out this wave of confusion and uncertainty and we remain positive until we can take off again to a new adventure. God bless.
Absolutely stunning ... the amazing arches, art and architecture. How easily we traveled and took such things for granted.
