Philly For Fifteen Minutes

Over the Labor Day weekend, we flew cross country to visit with our friends/travel buddies. We were planning on visiting them when they were living in Kentucky, because I was eager to see the state. But that did not happen and they moved back to New Jersey before we can even plan on visiting them. Then, the 2020 happened and now in 2022, they found themselves with 2 new girls, our pseudo-nieces. These adorable kids compelled us to find time to finally make the visit.

While a short Labor Day weekend trip was not ideal, we had to make do with what our tight schedule could allow. And so we flew via Spirit from Oakland Airport to Philadelphia. This would be my first time flying Spirit, the budget friendly airline, but my experience was all positive.

The minute we were cruising at the ideal elevation, I started my vacation and ordered some drinks and then enjoyed the views from my window seat. This was not a full flight and every row only has 2 people, leaving the middle seat empty. Something about keeping the plane in balance or something.

This trip was not meant for sightseeing, just visiting friends who over the years have become family. It's funny sometimes how life turns out. This couple we met on our first cruise to the Mediterranean, and our first encounter with them was touring Cairo (one of the ports in that cruise). Since then, we have cruised with them a few times and have become really close. So, this visit was really wonderful reconnection and meeting the parents and their new daughters.

However, we found a couple of hours to drive to Philly, which is 30 minutes away from their home in New Jesey. I still cannot get over how close the states are on this side fo the country, and how different the landscape is. So very green and fresh looking. They asked me what I want to see and I said I wanted to see the Liberty Bell, that is all. Besides that is all we have time for. This was all look and see and then go home.

These last two are from New Jersey. We were bbq-ing in the yard and I took these photos.

As expected, this brief encounter with Philly only whetted my appetite to see more of her sights. I'm going to put her back in my list.

  1. You've got some beautiful photos of a place I haven't had a chance to visit. I'm glad you were able to connect with your friends even if only briefly. It's good news that you had a positive experience with the budget airline.

  2. Very nice tour of Philadelphia. That home has a lot of grass to mow, at east until the first hard freeze.

  4. Love that beautiful sky in the second to last photo. I used to fly into Philly regularly (my company was based in NJ). It is indeed a beautiful area, and so different from the western US!

  5. I absolutely enjoyed your cyber trip to Philadelphia and New Jersey photographs. On a short trip you took wonderful photographs from the airplane, then the shot of the Liberty Bell a second goal after seeing your travel buddies and nieces and what a sunset you all encountered. What a lovely quick flight to make more memories.
