In Search of Wildflowers in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park
All the talk about superbloom caused by the abundance of rain in the winter persuaded us to seek these supposed superbloom sites nearby. The most widely known superbloom in Antelope Valley is a very long drive away from us, so that's crossed off our list. Locally, there are several places to see them. One of them on the list is Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Kenwood in Sonoma Valley. We have camped there before, so we know this place. That being said, we were excited to go back there, because we haven't been back since that church camping.
Upon entry, we chatted with the park ranger and I mentioned that the reason we were there was the abundance of wildflowers that's all over the net. He said, the internet lied. There were wildflowers, but not the superbloom that everyone talked about. A bit disappointed, but I was eager to take a hike here. I did a little hike here before when we camped here, but that was in July, when all the grass were dry and brown, not verdant like this in April after a very wet winter.
With the help of the ranger, we took the Meadow Trail hoping for some wildflower sightings.
First sight of wildflowers.
There were changes in elevation along this loop trail. The weather was warm to hot, but breezy, so not uncomfortable at all.
There are a few of these lizards.
Midway we saw a large patch of wildflowers, but these are tiny pink and light purple flowers.
People stopped here to take a shot.
On the way home we took the Sears Point Drive that passed through the San Pablo National Wildlife Refuge. So bummed to see that my video did not show the flock of flying birds.
A beautiful hike with so many wonderful views! Even though you did not find a super bloom the wildflowers you did see where pretty. The lizard surprised me!
ReplyDeleteNice hike! California has so much to offer. Last time I visited Napa Valley, the place was packed and the traffic a nightmare. Some day I'd like to go back and spend more time to explore this beautiful area.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fat lizard At first I thought it was a frog! Yes, the "S" word (superbloom) gets vastly overused by people. We had a good bloom year in the southern deserts, but not what I would call a superbloom.
ReplyDeleteWell you know, superbloom or not, you had a great hike. Thanks for all the photos. I loved the waterfall especially.
