Israel/Jordan 2023: Beit Shean National Park
Day 6 of the trip, we were leaving Tiberias and traveling south to Jerusalem. However, we had one stop this morning. About 40 km and we were pulling up into Beit Shean, one of the country's largest archeological sites.
At first sight while the bus was pulling up into the parking lot, I thought that this was a small-time ruins location. I even went as far as to question myself why are we even here. However, once we got on the ground and entered the compound, I saw why this is part of the tour and why this site is a must-see.
To start, the compound is huge. Off the entrance there is a miniature model of the Roman-Byzantine city and the geography surrounding the area. From this spot also is a incredible panoramic view of the old city in ruins. The ruins fuel the imagination of the grandeur of the old city.
Among the many things we saw were the bath house, the Roman Temple, the main street or Palladius Street with tall columns on both sides. Such a joy to walk about the entirety of the archeological city. There's so much to see and explore, and how badly I felt that we were not able to stay as long as we wanted. This is one of the major disadvantages of a group tour - limited time in every spot.
Here are the photos my husband and I took of this incredible spot.
Absolutely fascinating!

I am amazed at what was preserved, even mosaics, and how much is known about daily life (i.e. the bathhouse). The sky is so blue, too. This was such perfect reading for International Holocaust Remembrance Day, as Carol said.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a place that truly rewards exploration.
ReplyDeleteSome grand ruins, here!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! This must have been a grand city!
Your work is really amazing. I advice you to upload some interesting flowers pictures.
