Israel & Jordan 2023: Little Petra

When we left the pit stop, I knew we were going to Petra per itinerary. What I didn't know was that the landscape on the way there was going to be incredibly scenic. I was giddy with joy as we drove through this paradisiacal landscape.

Lucky people who can stop to admire the view. The domes and structures in the distance are part of a hotel/resort. I didn't get the name when we passed it.

We pulled up and I was very much surprise when the tour director announced that we were visiting Little Petra. I had no idea that there exists a miniature Petra. Most people know of the existence of Petra, but I bet you didn't realize there's a little sister next door, eh?

The grazing goats became instant attractions to our group.

The entry to Little Petra, one of the best attractions in the world that is FREE. And because it's smaller and lesser known, there's not many people who come to visit. We were there in the late afternoon, around 4:30 pm, and there's just a handful of people outside of our group and we're about 44 people.

Little Petra is also known as Siq al-Barid, which means cold canyon due to its orientation and the high walls obstructing the sun.

Narrow passage to the main "town".

The sun is ready to call it a day.

PXL_20230123_133602489 If I remember correctly, this was a tomb carved from a rock.

One more look before leaving.

The caves used to be homes to the ancient Nabateans, now the goats call them homes for the night. Hence, we've been warned not to enter them because there's no telling what kind of filth or smell awaited us.

On the way to the hotel, we caught sight of a beautiful sunset. Two days in a row, we've been able to watch a beautiful sunset.

Sometimes, when I visit something incredible like this one I find myself unable to describe what I am seeing or what I am feeling at the moment. The stunning natural beauty of this old Nabatean village overwhelms the senses, even up to now, just looking at the photos.

  2. Wow! Such other-worldly landscapes.
Now we know that there's a Little Petra and it is quite a sight, too.
The wall art is intriguing, it's not painted, is it? It looks like it was put together with some objects.

Thank you so much for this virtual tour.
