Israel & Jordan: Petra Museum and Wadi Rum Experience
When I met up with my husband, after his solo exploration of the entire Petra, we decided to allow time to see the Museum. It's an optional stop for us, but we both wanted to see it.
The Museum is a wonderful companion to the visit to Petra.
Here are some of the photos from our short museum visit.
We returned to the hotel (for rest and lunch) before going to our next adventure. We were going to Wadi Rum. I remember how far we had to drive to get to Wadi Rum (100 km). On the drive, most of my tourmates were taking a catnap while I was afraid I'd miss something fascinating along the way.
This activity was called the Wadi Rum Safari and Sunset Watching, which was an Optional Tour, but every single one of us signed up for it. Wadi Rum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, just like Petra. Wadi Rum is an Arabic phrase which means "valley". It is also known as Valley of the Moon for its otherworldly appearance.
From here you can easily see the Seven Pillars of Wisdown, which is the largest and most famous rock formation in Wadi Rum. There are seven distinct elements that look like they are leaning and supporting each other.
We were grouped into 6 and sat on the bed of a pickup truck. Mind you, there were no seat belts, we had to hold on to whatever for dear life. But it was fun.
It was a bumpy ride.
We stopped at a dune. The tour director told us we could climb it if we want to.
Of course we wanted to climb it. Then we took photos from up there.
Me reaching the top with a big smile.
Back in the truck, we drove for a look-see of the rock formation they called Trump, apparently for its similarity to Trump's profile.
I did not see the Trump's profile rock, but the tour director was pointing in the direction of this rock. I don't see, do you?
Next, we stopped at this massive rock formation, a huge block of rock jutting from the sand, very impressive.
The reason why we stopped here was to see the petroglyphs. There were over 20,000 petroglyphs and inscriptions have been documented inside Wadi Rum, which traces human existence back to 12,000 years in this spot.
It was starting to get dark, so we drove to the site where we would be sunset watching.
The site.
Fellow sunset worshippers. We stayed in the back of the truck.
The sunset was not the last activity of the day. Dinner ensued inside one of the resorts inside the valley.
We politely asked to see the interior of this dome structure. I wanna stay here.
Another option is s cabin stay.
Food is ready, cooked underground, like the Hawaiians.
Dining Room.
While chilling in the pool area and chatting with guests of the resort, a cat jumped on my husband's lap.
Last look at the resort before getting on the bus for another 1.5 drive to the hotel. Today I logged over 30,000 steps.
How amazing and how beautiful. I'd be like you, definitely afraid to nap and miss anything even on a long drive. Good going climbing that mountain and you look so happy -- it looks warm and sunny but from your coat I guess it was cool! ... Really lovely tour although I would definitely *prefer NOT to see that one profile rock. (If I saw it which I didn't it would turn me off immediately).
ReplyDeleteWow that sure was an exciting day! Lovely photos and narration.
ReplyDeleteQuite an outing you had. I love all the rock formations. Kind of reminds me of the US southwest. That food looks interesting and the dining room is cool. The little dome room is great. I'd love to stay in it also.
ReplyDeleteWow - great shots!

After watching "Lawrence of Arabia" in my much younger years, I always wanted to see Wadi Rum. Great to revisit it through your post. So much has changed since we visited in 2000 or was it 1999. I may not remember the year but I remember feeling really blessed I checked it off my bucket list.
ReplyDeleteNeat museum!
ReplyDeleteAnd wonderful landscapes!
I can relate to the not wanting to nap for fear of missing the sights along the way. :D
The pick-up truck ride must be a great memory! :)
