Israel & Jordan 2023: Amman Citadel, Part 1
On the last full day of this trip (Israel & Jordan) and the only full day in Amman, we decided to make this our own DIY Amman day. Most of the the people went with the Optional Tour offered by the tour company. Some had decided to pre-book a tour from a different company. Our plan, on the other hand, was to get a taxi to take us to where we wanted to go for day.
The hotel had a travel desk in the lobby, so we approached it and asked them to arrange a taxi to take us to Citadel and back to the hotel. When the price was agreed upon, it was a go. However, this turned out to be a half day trip.
View from our hotel room window.
We drove through the very modern part of Amman.
We passed by the Supreme Court Building.
In the distance, the view was dominated by the blue-domed mosque, which was the King Abdullah I mosque. We persuaded our taxi driver to make a quick stop for photo op. Thankfully, he acceded. Gave us a few minutes to take photos.
Across the street from the mosque, we got another surprise. A very interesting facade belonged to the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate. It was gated and closed.
We wanted to go inside the mosque, which was open to visitors for a fee, but our driver was keen on staying with the destination that was agreed upon and no add-ons.
Personally, the only place I wanted to see in Amman was the Amman Citadel, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also the most popular spot for tourists, in my opinion. A very historic site that sits on Jebel Al Qala’a, a hill that rises 850 meters above sea level. It has 1700-meter wall that dates back to the Bronze Age. The Citadel offered a spectacular birds eye view of the city, including the other point of interest which is the Roman Theatre. As expected, there is a nominal fee to enter.
Entry costs JD3, which is about $4.23.
The Roman Theatre, seen through the haze from the Citadel, was thought to have been built during the first two centuries of Roman Republic. It has 6,000 seats and is currently still used for events like concerts, etc.
See the large scale mural?
I spotted another huge mural. The view from up here was simply expansive.
The centerpiece of the Citadel is the Temple of Hercules.
To be continued.......

ReplyDeleteCharming ruins. And the Roman theater looks very impressive. Nice to know that it's still in use; that will help keeping it maintained, I guess!
ReplyDeleteAnd what views from the Citadel area!
Interesting. a place that old gives you a different perspective
