Breaking the Monotony
DAY TRIP TO RENO, NV
A long drive (3 hours) for us is definitely a sure-fire way to break the monotony of life (the one between those rare travels). Reno in neighboring Nevada state is historically a favorite weekend get-away spot for Bay Area locals, along with neighboring Lake Tahoe. Since it's been ages since we went for a visit, we picked Reno for this day trip destination.
Casino on the right, casino on the left.
We drove past the casinos, not today.
We ended up in Bicentennial Park located near downtown, along the Truckee River. It is a 2-acre park with walking and biking paths, tables and benches and a sculptures, which I read are on a rotating basis.

There were a couple more I think but I didn't photograph them.
NIGHT OUT IN NAPA
Another fantastic way to shake off the ennui is a night out with friends. We were supposed to do a distillery tour in Mare Island, but for one reason or another the tour did not materialize. Instead, we decided to do a little tasting at Savage and Cooke.
Not a whiskey person, I just like the bottle and the design.
Afterwards, we drove to Napa to see the Lighted Art Festival. According to their website: The Napa Lighted Art Festival is a celebration of creative arts, technology, lights, and supports innovative techniques using light and light technologies as a growing art medium.
The husband and I went last year too, but this would be the first time for our companions. It's nice to know that they have different installations every year.

There's a few more, but this would be my favorite this year. A light show on the facade of The First Presbyterian Church.
Talk about dedication. Raining heavily but we stayed put to watch.
Side note - this was the day that the SF 49ers were playing the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round (Won 24-21). By the time that we finished watching the exhibits, we wanted to catch the last of the game. Every single bar/restaurant was packed. Downtown Joe's placed outdoor seating (but it was raining) under an awning. We were watching the game from the outside while getting rained on.
When the game was over, deliriously happy people filed out of the restaurant and we went in and grabbed greasy food to celebrate the win.
Needless to say, we all went home happy that evening.
Great scenery but the art is also fantastic. Love the neon cards! #WWOT
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine being close enough to Reno for a day trip. Sounds wonderful. I had not been there since I was in high school.
ReplyDeleteThat light show is wonderful. I would love to see IRL something like the lights on the church.
Amazing art.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Makes me feel like I've been on a road trip which is not so easy here in Honolulu. Aloha

I was only to Las Vegas once (late 1970s) never to Reno. Those mountains in the distance with the snow were so scenic. I loved the public art displays in Reno that you showed. That light installation looked fantastic - for some reason the videos wouldn't play - kept saying due to a network error - but your still pictures told the story.
ReplyDeleteLoved your day trip! Those light installations are amazing!
