A Tale of Two Beaches
[I initially wanted to start the new series after I had come back from the vacation, but on second thought I may be still jet-lagged and/or exhausted, so I drafted this post scheduled to come out after the vacation.]
Late June in an effort to escape the heat in our town we decided go to a beach. No particular beach in mind, but we know which general area in the Bay Area we wanted to go to. Googling beaches near me or something like that we found one result that was new to us. Imagine that!
Duxbury Reef State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) sits at the southern end of the Point Reyes peninsula, just a mile west of Bolinas in Marin County. Despite being one of the smallest marine protected areas (MPAs) on the California coast at less than three-quarters of a square mile in area, this SMCA hosts one of the largest shale reefs in North America. Duxbury Reef was selected for inclusion in the statewide MPA network in part due to the extensive tidepool network that forms on the shale reef at low tide. [source]
Going down to the tide pools and Agate Beach. At the bottom of the steps, go right to the beach. We went left first.
It was cold, windy and cloudy with few people on the beach.
After exploring this side, we walked towards the other side, where we can see sandy beach.
We walked a long ways and decided we would check out the other beach nearby to get warmed up a little bit. On the walk back, we got a show.
A short drive away is the typical wide sandy beach, crowded, and hot with the sun blazing hot - Bolinas Beach. Just a short drive away and only four short miles away, the situation is a complete opposite.
I purposely took shots that did not show many people.
...this beach bum would like the sandy one best!
