Turkiye 2023: Gallipoli/Canakkale
The main reason for the stop to Gallipoli is to visit the Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Memorial/Cemetery. Gallipoli is the site of the famous Ottoman victory against the Allies during WW 1.
Along the beach by the Dardanelles is the memorial where photos and notes about the battle were plastered on the wall.
The cemetery is by the beach and so peaceful. They could not have chosen a better spot for these soldiers' eternal rest.
We visited the cemetery for fallen Turkish soldiers which we reached a short drive away.
Along the way we passed by some trenches from the war.
Closer look at the bridge.
For the night, we stayed at another wonderful hotel by the Dardanelles. We watched the sunset by the shoreline while having a little happy hour drinks.
This is the back of the hotel, by the pool. Our rooms have views of the Dardanelles.
After a very heavy meal punctuated by four or five servings of dessert, a walk around the hotel was needed. It was a very beautiful evening.
Sadly, we will be spending only one night here and then on to another city.

Delightful photos!

ReplyDeleteNice post, good pictures!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing historical place. What was the energy like there? Hard to believe thousands of soldiers made their way along the beach.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers, on both sides.

ReplyDeleteSo much history here. I've never seen a cemetery right on the beach like that. You captured some beautiful skies!
Quite a memorial. Beautiful skies.
ReplyDeleteWOW Historic and beautifully shown
ReplyDeleteI saw the movie about Gallipoli and young men running toward machine guns to be slaughtered. Horrific! I'm glad to see the memorial.
ReplyDeleteI have visited a number of Civil War battlefields with cemeteries (such as Gettysburg) here in the United States - I would have loved to have seen this site. This WWI battle I knew about but was never taught about in school. Our teachings of history can be so lacking. It's a beautiful, peaceful site.
ReplyDeleteA poignant visit to Gallipoli. The Anzac Memorial and cemetery sound incredibly moving. Glad you enjoyed the beautiful sunset and hotel, even if it was a short stay.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful tribute all the young who died in Gallipoli. I haven't travelled there but I did see a movie about it years ago.
ReplyDeleteAwesome memorial and great travel photos ~
