California 2025: Memorial Day Weekend Trip (Part 1)

For this year's Memorial Day weekend (and our wedding anniversary trip), we picked Solvang as place to celebrate. Solvang is a charming California town in the Santa Ynez Valley about a 35-minute drive from Santa Barbara. It is well-known for its Danish village atmosphere with windmills and half-timbered buildings. We were so excited for this road trip, since it had been over 20 years since the last time we came for a visit.

A must-try (according to the Internet) is aebelskiver, a spherical Danish pastries similar to pancakes traditionally served hot and topped with powdered sugar and a side of fruit jam, often raspberry, strawberry, or lingonberry. It's a round-shaped beignet in my opinion.

After dinner, we went for a walk but the town is starting to wind down for the day - so early we thought. With the stores all closed or in the process of closing, we decided to call it a day as well and drove to our hotel in nearby Lompoc.
