California 2025: Random Weekend Trips, part 2

In July, we took a weekend day trip to see the spectacular Burney Falls. Burney Falls is located within McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park in Shasta County, California. It is a magnificent 129-foot waterfall often lauded for its stunning beauty. President Theodore Roosevelt is even said to have declared it the "Eighth Wonder of the World". It's a natural landmark that showcases the unique geological formations of the area, formed by volcanic activity and erosion over millions of years. It is fed by underground springs at and above the falls, creating a constant flow of over 100 million gallons per day, even during dry summer months. The fact that the last time I went to visit it was some 20 odd years ago, and so the excitement was high with this visit.

We're going to go down near the falls, by the rocks.

After visiting the falls, another fun stop is the Packway Materials Sculpture Park located in nearby town of Cassel. A fabulous photo-op spot, this roadside park features numerous large sculptures crafted from recycled materials. It's free and open 24 hours a day.

On the way home, we stopped to take photos of the sunflower fields near the junction of I-505 and I-5.

  8. What a wonderful day trip. The falls are so different than waterfalls in my New York State. I love to see sunflower fields in full bloom.

  9. I love Burney Falls! One year there was a thunderstorm, and the next morning the ranger drove through to make sure lightening hadn't hit any trees. It soaked inside our tent, so we had to leave. My in-laws at the time lived in Lake Almanor, so we surprised them by dropping in!
