Iceland & Greenland Cruise (August) 2024: Touchdown Reykjavik
We landed in Reykjavik at around 8:30 am. The customs area was empty so we just breezed through. In order to get to downtown, we had to take a taxi or the bus. Just outside the airport are the buses to downtown. Bus tickets have to be purchased online. We took the FlyBus and enjoyed mostly a gloomy gray 45-minute drive to the downtown
Large mural in the arrival area.
Some of the passing scenery from the bus ride.
Inside the main bus terminal was a Sbarro that was the running a promo of small coffee + croissant for like $7.00. Pretty good we thought, since we've been warned that food is really expensive there. That would be our breakfast.
We were flying blind here, well sort of. You see we have not done extensive research like we used to with trips that we take because we were preoccupied with our sick kitty. Unfortunately, a week before our trip and just a day before the kitty's surgery he crossed the rainbow bridge. So grief stricken we could not function for days leading up to the trip. Truth be told I was willing to forego this trip to be with my sick kitty in his post-surgery recuperation despite losing the money we paid for the entire trip since we have not purchased travel insurance.
But thankfully, there's Google and Google maps. And since we have plenty of time before we were slated to check in to our cruise, we decided to visit the main attraction here for us, which is the famous church called Hallgrimskirkja - an iconic symbol of the city.
As luck would have it, the church is within walking distance from the bus terminal. As I'm writing this post, Google maps said it's a 10-minute walk. Took us longer, we probably took the scenic route.
Across the terminal is a city park, Hljómskálagarður Park. It's apparently a big park but we only skirted it on one side.
Tree house in the front yard got our attention.
Can't believe we found it. There actually was a lot of people walking ahead of us and eventually we figured that if we followed them (while still monitoring Google maps), we'd end up at the church.
