Iceland & Greenland Cruise (August) 2024: Day 10: Reykjavik, part 2
The last spot to visit in Reykjavik is the Thingvellir National Park. According to Mr. Internet: Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir) in Iceland is a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its dramatic geology where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart, creating visible fissures like the Almannagjá gorge, and for its profound historical significance as the location of Iceland's first parliament (Alþingi) founded in 930 AD, making it a unique blend of natural wonder and cultural heritage. Visitors can walk between continents, snorkel or dive in the crystal-clear Silfra fissure, and explore sites where the ancient parliament met.
The rain persisted, albeit lighter than earlier in the day.
Entering the national park. Perhaps due to the weather or the lateness of the hour, I was a bit nervous about the lack of traffic coming in. We were driving on what seemed like a deserted road for a long time. However, when we reached the parking lot by the Visitor Center there were several cars there, and that allayed my fears.
It was wet and incredibly windy.
We only came to see the fissure here and once that was seen and photographed, we drove back to the port. We kept the car overnight as we were flying out in the morning and still need it to get to the airport.
Twilight shot of Videy Island. I regret not able to visit this island. Tomorrow is disembarkation day and this incredible adventure will be over.
Here's wishing everyone a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
