Mainz, Germany: Mainz Cathedral (St. Martin's Cathedral)

Mainz Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of St. Martin, is a 1,000-year-old masterpiece of Romanesque architecture that stands as the most iconic landmark in Mainz. Founded in 975 AD by Archbishop Willigis, it was designed to reflect the political and religious power of the Holy Roman Empire, serving as one of the three "Imperial Cathedrals" (Kaiserdom) along the Rhine River. The structure is famous for its unique double-choir layout, with chancels at both the east and west ends, and its distinct red sandstone construction that features a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles due to centuries of reconstructions following seven major fires. Historically, it was a site of immense prestige, hosting the coronations of seven German kings and serving as the final resting place for 45 archbishops, whose ornate funerary monuments form a massive stone portrait gallery within the nave.

Despite 80% of Mainz being destroyed during World War II, the cathedral remained largely intact.

We happened to arrive while the choir was rehearsing, and it was such a lovely surprise. The harmonies sounded absolutely beautiful!

I was planning on visiting 2 other churches here, but we ran out of time.

After the visit to the cathedral, we did a little bit of shopping, then back to the hotel with just a little time before the Orientation Meeting with our Tour Manager followed by a dinner.

For dinner we were served a prix fixe menu with wine. It was really a nice touch after a very long day.
