Sky Watch #62

IMG_0549, originally uploaded by M'roy.

With all the destruction/calamity happening lately, i.e. worst flooding the Philippines has seen in 40 years, the earthquakes in American Samoa and Indonesia, sky watching takes on a more spiritual turn. While we skywatch, let us say a prayer or two for our brothers and sisters who are in pain, grieving, devastated, and lost.

Photo Hunt #56: Twisted

IMG_0036, originally uploaded by M'roy.

See anything twisted here?

I have nothing in my archives that would fit the theme perfectly, but I hope this twisted horn/antler will suffice.

Sky Watch #61

IMG_0090, originally uploaded by M'roy.

As I was driving to work I managed to see how beautiful our sky is today. It is blue with patches of puffy white clouds exactly like this one the picture. Except that this image was taken in the spring. The minute I snapped this image I knew I was going to show it for skywatch. I didn't know that it would take me until Fall to post it. Better late than never, isn't it.

Quiet Moment

ohlone16, originally uploaded by M'roy.

I noticed that my walks during the spring have a different tone or mood than the walks I take during the fall. In the fall, my walks are more meditative, more subdued, more relaxed.

It Won't Be Long......

IMG_0448copy, originally uploaded by M'roy.

before the landscape looks like this.

Are you like me, do you love autumn? I know it's California and we don't have those gorgeous colors in the Northeast, but I still love the smell of autumn air.

True to Bay Area form though, we have our summer heat in September. It's gonna be boiling around here all this week.

Photo Hunt #55: Upside down

red hot poker, originally uploaded by M'roy.

This week's theme posed quite a challenge for me, although I have some sort of an idea what to post (i.e. reflection). However,I thought why not stretch it out a little bit and so off I went digging into the archives again and found this.

Some plants produce flowers that bloom upside down like the red hot poker, which is a big hit with hummingbirds. I spent countless moments watching a hummingbird enjoy this delectable goodness.

SkyWatch #60

First image is that of a September 1 sunset looking west infront of my house. The second image is a September 2 sunset taken in Raley's parking lot looking out to San Pablo Bay. I have been lucky with sunsets this month as I see them on my commute home. I'm posting two images today, because heck, it's my 60th post to Skywatch.

So Long Patrick

white, originally uploaded by M'roy.

While I don't really consider Patrick Swayze as a favorite, I love watching three of his movies over and over, DIRTY DANCING, RED DAWN, and GHOST. And I love his song, SHE'S LIKE THE WIND, from Dirty Dancing. The lyrics below rang true for me. A million years ago, there was a boy who was just out of my league. So long Patrick, rest in peace.

Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind

Photo Hunt #54: Electric

vegas, originally uploaded by M'roy.

We were driving around Vegas in search of a place to dine when I spotted these electric posts. I thought I'd take a shot in case I would run a series on electric posts later. I have always loved looking at them in tandem with skywatching. So here's my dusk shot of a different Vegas.

Photo Hunt #53: Orange

IMG_0488, originally uploaded by M'roy.

I was surprised to see orange groves on our way back from Sequioa-Kings Canyon NP one summer so I snapped while we were about to take the curve.

I surfed the net for some information about California's citrus industry, in particular orange industry for this theme. Here's what I found.

~ California's citrus industry ranks second to Florida.

~ Oranges, on average, accounted for 2/3 the state's citrus crop.

~ While California produces 24 percent of the nation’s oranges, its crop accounts for 80 percent of those going to the fresh-market (which means you're probably eating some California oranges right now).

~ Navel oranges comprise most of California’s orange crop. Navels accounted for about 75 percent over the past three seasons. Valencia oranges account for the remainder.

~ The value of production for California’s oranges averaged $578 million over the past three seasons, 98 percent of which came from fresh-market sales.

Sky Watch #58

IMG_0003, originally uploaded by M'roy.

With the sun setting earlier nowadays, I am able to do quite a few sunset watching while on the drive home.

This one was on Tuesday night between 7:30 and 7:45. The five-lane West 580 in Oakland was reduced to 2 lanes as police cars, tow trucks, and ambulance/firetrucks close 3 lanes to attend to a nasty accident. Since we were barely moving at all and the sunset is right in front of me (driving towards the bay) I decided to whip out my point and shoot and well, shoot! I got to about 2 shots when my car needed to move about five inches. I was also going to shoot the accident, but I saw the policeman was right there. I don't wanna get caught being a kibitzer. Anyway, I thought I'd let you know this one's a SOOC.
